Professional Liability Insurance for Doctors

Medical practice rests on your clinical judgement. The right indemnity cover means that if a patient brings a claim, you are not carrying the defence, or its cost, on your own.

What it covers

Cover follows the specialty and the setting.

Medical professional liability responds to patient claims arising from the practice of medicine. Depending on the policy it covers the indemnity and the costs of defence, within the limits of the contract.

Two doctors in the same specialty may need very different policies: one sees patients for diagnosis in their own rooms, the other operates at an affiliated clinic. The invasiveness of the procedures, the setting and the caseload are what shape a quotation, not the specialty label on its own.

Settings of practice

Where you practise.

The setting determines who carries which responsibility, and what has to be stated expressly in the policy.

  • Private practice

The clinical work and the practice staff are entirely your responsibility. Alongside professional liability we normally look at public liability for the premises, which covers something quite different: the patient who is injured in the waiting room.

  • Clinic or hospital affiliation

The clinic carries its own insurance, but it does not necessarily extend to an affiliated doctor on the same terms. We read the affiliation agreement and show you where the clinic’s cover stops.

  • Invasive procedures

Surgical and other invasive procedures are rated separately and often lead to a different limit and premium. So declare exactly what you perform.

  • Telemedicine and remote opinions

Remote consultation is now routine. The policy needs to name it, particularly when the patient is in another country and it is not obvious whose courts would hear a claim.

  • Aesthetic and non-therapeutic procedures

Aesthetic procedures are assessed on different criteria, because the patient is judging the result. They are declared separately.

  • Group practices and corporate structures

Where several doctors practise together, or the practice is a company, we work out whether the cover belongs with each doctor, with the company, or both, so that nobody is left out.

Two distinct covers

Professional liability and public liability for the practice.

The two are often confused. They cover entirely different events, and a doctor with their own rooms usually needs both.

What underwriters look at

The factors that shape a quotation.

  • Specialty and proceduresA detailed description of the procedures you perform, not simply the name of the specialty.
  • Setting of practiceRooms, clinic, on-call duties, home visits, or a combination of them.
  • CaseloadAn indication of the scale of the practice, and a common basis for rating.
  • Per-claim and aggregate limitsRead them together: the per-claim limit is the most a single claim can draw; the aggregate is the most the whole policy year can.
  • Retroactive dateIt sets how far back the policy will look. If you are already in practice, keep it when you change insurer.
  • Territorial scopePatients from abroad, medical tourism and second opinions given outside Greece need to be named in the policy.

To get started

What we need in order to quote.

  • Specialty and a detailed list of procedures
  • Setting of practice and any affiliated institutions
  • Approximate annual caseload
  • Year you began practising
  • Existing policy, if any, with its retroactive date
  • Any contractual requirements from a clinic or partner

We do not need patient details or clinical data. Please do not send us medical records or health information relating to third parties.

Common questions

Questions doctors ask.

  • Is medical professional liability insurance compulsory in Greece?

There is no general requirement on every doctor. In certain forms of practice the law does impose it: private doctors cooperating with ESY hospitals must hold professional liability cover, with minimum limits currently set at €100,000 per incident and €1,000,000 a year — without it the cooperation is not approved. The same applies to work at university clinics engaged through an ELKE, and to clinical-trial investigators. Otherwise it reaches you through the contract: private clinics ask for it routinely.

  • Am I covered by the insurance of the clinic where I work?

Not necessarily, and not always to the same extent. The clinic’s policy is there for the clinic first. An affiliated doctor may be covered, partly covered or outside it altogether, so read the affiliation agreement before you rely on it.

  • What happens if I stop practising?

Because these policies normally work on a claims-made basis, a claim can still be brought after you have stopped. Many offer an extended notification period for exactly this, and it is far easier to arrange before you close the practice than after.

  • What does it cost?

There is no single price. It depends on your specialty, how invasive the procedures are, your caseload, the limit of indemnity you choose and the excess. We usually present two or three limit options with the cost of each, so you can compare on what you get, not on price alone.
